Book Review: The Christmas Cake Cafe by Sue Watson #WYChristmasReadathon 2016

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Have you ever watched one of those feel good Hallmark channel Christmas romantic comedy? My aunts love those movies  and over time watching those holiday romcoms became a part of our family’s Christmas traditions. The Christmas Cake Café by Sue Watson is a Christmas romantic comedy book. It was so much fun and a delight to read.

Review and thoughts: This Christmas romance opens with Jen Barker and her long time boyfriend Tim at dinner, it is days before Christmas and also days before Jen’s birthday, her 40th. Jen is waiting on the perfect birthday/Christmas proposal  but instead of that big wish coming true, Tim dumps her. Can you imagine being dumped on Christmas Eve which is also your birthday Eve? As is expected Jen is devastated.

And the hilarity begins. Jen’s perfect world crumbles. The following Christmas, Jen’s younger sister Jody invites her to go along with her and her friends on a working holiday in the Swiss Alps. Their first night at the winter resort Jen meets the handsome ski instructor Jon Zutter. Jon and Jen, sounds perfect, right? The pair bonds over sweet treats and Jen’s  continuous mishaps.

The novel is as much chicklit or women’s fiction as it is a holiday romance. Besides the obvious plot line and funny lead up to Jen and Jon romance, the novel also shows female friendships and sisterhood. I was particularity drawn to the relationship between Jen and Jody. Jody and Jen are different in their personalities and there is also a big age gap, Jen is 41 and Jody is in her late 20s and carefree. They are half sisters and it was interesting to read how this relationship grew.

Ratings: I gave this book three stars on Goodreads. It is a light, fun easy to read book and is quite entertaining.

Who should read this book:  Read this book if you enjoy romance, romantic comedies, chick lit and of course if you love Christmas.
