My New Favourite – Scribd

I have a brand new favourite – Scribd book subscription service. A BookTuber, Book Roast was sponsored by the company and that’s how I signed up for a free trial.

I love the service. And I have been using Scribd since June 2018.

What is Scribd?

Scribd is a digital library, e-book and audiobook subscription service that includes one million titles. It is basically the Netflix of books. And it is brilliant. So I signed up and added my credit card details and enjoyed one month free, then I began paying in July. The service costs USD $8.99 and I pay JMD $1,188.06.

Pros

• I fell in love with audiobooks. I just love listening to a good book throughout my work day.
• The cost is decent for what you get, it is advertised as unlimited but I don’t think it really is.
• I am enjoying more new books than ever before. Without the commitment of buying a new book, I will preview the first two or three chapters before I save and read.
• I get to basically borrow a book instead buying and owning a book that I may not end up liking.

Cons

• There are books that I can’t access. This bothers me, it says not available in my country.
• The search option isn’t always very smart. Oftentimes I search for a title and nothing comes up. Then, when I search the author’s name I will find that exact book under that author’s page.

The Books I Enjoyed On Scribd

To date, I read/experienced 16 books on Scribd. This is a mix of mostly audiobooks, and a few comic books.

The best book listening experience so far has been The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo. The author narrators her own story and this is just the perfect way to experience this lyrical novel.

Then, I found a new series, the Parasol Protectorate by Gail Carriger is so much fun. It is a steampunk paranormal book series. I enjoyed listening to the first three books in the five book series. The narrator, Emily Gray does a fantastic job.

Check is a snippet of the synopsis of book one, Soulless:

Alexia Tarabotti is laboring under a great many social tribulations.

First, she has no soul. Second, she’s a spinster whose father is both Italian and dead. Third, she was rudely attacked by a vampire, breaking all standards of social etiquette.

Where to go from there? From bad to worse apparently, for Alexia accidentally kills the vampire–and then the appalling Lord Maccon (loud, messy, gorgeous, and werewolf) is sent by Queen Victoria to investigate.

With unexpected vampires appearing and expected vampires disappearing, everyone seems to believe Alexia responsible. Can she figure out what is actually happening to London’s high society?

Since I started using this service I haven’t bought or done any book shopping. I quite like this idea of paying to use a digital library. I like borrowing books, reading and listening without a commitment of owning each individual copy.
