Welcome back to My Jamaican Vignettes, today we are discussing 2024 reading goals. Whether you’re an avid reader or just starting to explore the world of literature, setting reading goals can help you stay motivated, expand your horizons, and discover new authors and genres that you’ll love.

Why Set Reading Goals?

Setting reading goals isn’t just about reading more books; it’s about enriching your life through the power of the written word. Here are some of the benefits of setting reading goals:

  • Increased Knowledge and Personal Growth: Reading exposes us to new ideas, perspectives, and experiences, allowing us to learn and grow as individuals.
  • Stress Reduction and Relaxation: Immersing yourself in a good book can be a great way to escape from the daily grind and find moments of peace and tranquility.
  • Enhanced Vocabulary and Writing Skills: Regular reading can improve your vocabulary, grammar, and overall writing skills.
  • Expanded Imagination and Creativity: Literature sparks our imagination and creativity, allowing us to see the world in new and exciting ways.

Tips for Setting Realistic Reading Goals

When setting reading goals, it’s important to be realistic and consider your lifestyle and commitments. Here are some tips for setting achievable goals:

  • Start with a moderate goal and gradually increase it over time. In 2023 I set the reading goal of reading 36 books and I ended up reading 50+ books.
  • Consider your reading speed and the length of books you typically enjoy.
  • Schedule dedicated reading time each day or week. I read for at least one hour before bed, I will read for 30 minutes during my lunch break throughout the week.
  • Join a book club or online reading community for motivation and support.
  • Don’t be afraid to adjust your goals if needed as the year progresses.

2024 Reading Goals Inspiration

Looking for some inspiration for your 2024 reading goals? Here are a few ideas:

  • Read a book from every continent: Explore the rich literary traditions of different cultures around the world.
  • Read a book by an author from each continent: Discover new voices and perspectives from diverse backgrounds.
  • Read a book recommended by a friend or family member: Expand your reading horizons by trying something new.
  • Reread a favourite book from your childhood: Rediscover the joy of a beloved story and see it in a new light.
  • Read a book related to a hobby or interest: Deepen your knowledge and passion for something you love. In 2024, I will be reading several books on the craft of writing and book publishing.

My 2024 Reading Goals

In terms of numbers of books, I want to read 50 books this year so it will average a book each week. I feel like that is manageable. Kiki from Instagram is also continuing the Jamaica Kincaid readalong and I will be participating in that.

I also have a personal goal of reading a Caribbean author each month, so I hope that goes well. And I will continue to prioritise books by woman and books by women of colour in particular.

Remember, reading should be an enjoyable experience, not a chore. Choose books that pique your interest and allow yourself to get lost in the stories. As you progress through your 2024 reading journey, celebrate your achievements and don’t be discouraged by setbacks.

Happy reading!

Next week will be a special guest post by my dear friend Marsha-Gay Robinson.
